Bombers Beat Misericordia 4-1 In NCAA Playoff Opener

Ithaca, N.Y. -- Senior Lacey Largeteau (Schoharie/Esperance) set school playoff records with three goals and seven points and the Bomber defense held visiting Misericordia without a shot over the last 66:14, beating the Cougars 4-1 in an NCAA first-round playoff game. The Bombers (13-3-4) advance to
Oneonta to face the Red Dragons in a second-round game Saturday at 1 p.m. Misericordia ends its season with an 11-6-3 record.

Largeteau scored all three of her goals in a 27-minute span of the second half. She tied the game in the 51st minute, then put the Bombers ahead 12 minutes later. She completed the hat trick with a goal in the 78th minute with senior Christine Dorney (East Islip/Islip Terrace) picking up the assist. Largeteau assisted on Dorney’s goal in the 84th minute to close out the scoring. Largeteau, who had never scored more than one goal in a game previously, tied the Ithaca record for goals in  game, held by five other players.

Misericordia took the lead on an unassisted goal by junior Cole Vennie, who converted a rebound off a shot by junior Miki Bedics that had been saved by Ithaca goalkeeper Aimee Meacham (Massena/Massena). Following Vennie’s goal, which came 23:14 into the first half, the Cougars were held without a shot. The Bombers finished with a 29-3 advantage in shots, including an 18-0 edge in the second half.

Meacham improved her record to 12-3-4, setting a school record for wins by a freshman. She made one save. Kathleen Schwarz made nine saves for the Cougars.

The Bombers are making their 15th NCAA playoff appearance (only one school has made more). Saturday’s game against Oneonta will mark the second straight year the two teams have met in the NCAA playoffs; The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the regional semifinals last year before Oneonta advanced 3-2 in penalty kicks en route to winning the national championship.
